My New Top Secret Project

My New Top Secret Project

I want to apologize for the blog being particularly quiet lately.

I’ve been writing and researching non-stop for my latest project, and I can’t wait to share what I’ve been working on.

Being Bueller: How to Embrace Your Inner Ferris and Take a Day Off…Without Getting Caught

Being Bueller: How to Embrace Your Inner Ferris and Take a Day Off…Without Getting Caught

I have a confession: I’ve fired people.  Lots and lots of people.  Hundreds.  You see, in my pre-writing life, I had a job supervising employees and, yes, sometimes sacking them.  It was never something I enjoyed doing.

Employee absences are on the rise with 40% of workers calling out of work when they aren’t sick. That number was up from 36% the year before.  I get it.  With work stresses and life pressures, sometimes you need a break. A day off. And no one knew this better than Ferris Bueller, the serendipitous master of playing hooky.  Ferris skipped out of school nine times in a single semester. For his final day off, he brought along his friend, Cameron, and girlfriend, Sloane. Surviving until graduation with that severe a case of senioritis should be impressive to everyone.

Musicals for Guys Who Hate Musicals

Musicals for Guys Who Hate Musicals

I’ve never enjoyed musicals. In fact, if I’m ever captured by enemy forces, a marathon of film musicals would be more effective at getting me to talk than waterboarding. I’m passionate about films. I love music. Common sense says that I’d love a combination of the two.

It may be a stereotype, but I’ve found that that most men just don’t like musicals. Blame societal pressures or gender conventions, but much like multi-level marketing companies, musicals just don’t seem to be our thing. As someone who possesses both X and Y chromosomes, I think I can speak for most men as to why: we favor logic over emotion.

A Kenny for Your Thoughts

Today’s lesson from silver-tongued silver fox Kenny Rogers comes from 1978’s “The Gambler.”

It is about knowing when to cut your losses and move on: Every gambler knows That the secret to survivin’ Is knowin’ what to throw away And knowin’ what to keep.

Save the TV Theme Song! (Episode 1)

Save the TV Theme Song! (Episode 1)

The birth of the television theme song is tied to the creation of the medium itself. Many of TV’s earliest programs were adapted from popular radio programs and the same music that played a part in the radio programs became part of the transition to television.  Over the next seventy years, these 30- to 90-second spots acquainted viewers with a series’ premise or character, or simply served to reintegrate viewers into the essence of a particular program.

101 Things to Do Before You Die: An Introduction

101 Things to Do Before You Die: An Introduction

If I died today, I’d die an abject failure. I’ve managed to complete just 16 tasks out of the 101 featured in the book 101 Things to Do Before You Die. That’s barely 15 percent. To make matters worse, when I got the book in 2007, I had already completed two of them before I’d even started.

I guess I should give you some background. 101 Things to Do Before You Die was written, designed, and illustrated by Richard Horne, and published in 2004. The book bills itself as “the definitive guide to everything you should do before it’s too late.”  I first ran across the book on the shelf of Barnes & Noble when I was 26.  Over the next year, I went back to the store several times to thumb through the pages. I loved the idea of completing through a list of adventures — some that I’d always wanted to do and others that would force me way way way out of my comfort zone.

Mr. T took the liberty of inviting some of his best friends over for today’s launch party at the Homan Estate, and I’m glad you could come as well!
